The winning story
Being race favourite in a marathon is easy, but in C2K you have so much time to propagate self doubts.  After building a substantial lead early in the event the second half of the race became a rollercoaster of deep fatigue followed by periods of relative recovery during which good running was possible.  Fatigue and doubts kicked in at Dalgety and again at Thredbo River where I had to force myself out of the car with much encouragement from my crew. Martin Fryer had almost caught me at Thredbo River which was the reality check I needed and the run/walk race up the hill was probably the toughest thing I've ever done. The sun rising as I climbed the final slopes was an awesome sight and to finish within my target time range was a testament to the outstanding job Deanne Nobbs did as crew to keep me going all night.  Even more inspiring was the trip back down the mountain as the remaining athletes made their way towards the summit in various states of fatigue and injury in the rising heat of day two.  This is an event without peer in Australia, an event that captures the imagination and inspires people to do the 'impossible.'
