What started as a small seed of an idea grew into an adventure that had to be attempted to find out if it was possible. With only one 100 miler under my belt and as a relatively new ultra runner, I wasn't sure if I could do this epic run. I knew I wanted to and I elected to forget my fears and just see what I could do. I was very lucky and Michael's fantastic support crew Clare and Karl agreed to also take on a second runner - myself. I was both excited and scared but I was now in.
We headed onwards through amazing if surreal conditions of heat, heavy rain, and deep mist. We battled sore feet, sore muscles, overwhelming fatigue and mismatches in our pacing style. The other runners and crew became our family and we were all united in our quest for success in the race. Our crew were our everything and gave us all we needed, including abandoning their car and standing out in the cold when I was exhausted and needed a 20 minute nap.
The penultimate section was the climb the summit at Mt Kosciusko, set amidst the amazing pink skies of dusk with the hot day quickly changing to a cold and wild wind. It was a magnificent feeling to have our wonderful support crew climb to with top with us so we could share the experience and achievement together.
To then descend and finish with Michael who was so patient, was a fantastic way to round off an unforgettable event.
